Congratulations to all the medal winners at the Masters National Championships this weekend;
Our very own Roger Baldwin was crowned World Champion in the Over 80 Singles event on Sunday.
He played Kim Swee Leong from Malaysia in the final, winning 21-15, 21-15.
Other Essex medallists were Lynne Swan in WD50 and Peter Emptage XD70.
The England team overall returned with two gold medals, Caroline Hale being the other winner in the WS55.
The tournament was graced by the participation of recently retired ex-professionals Hendra Setiawan (Indonesia), who picked up gold medals in Over 40 MD and XD and Brice Leverdez (France) who took home silver in MD35 and Bronze in XD35.

Essex O40s, led by captain Shah Kabir, has made an impressive run in the Masters County Championships 2025. The competition sees counties across the country divided into six regions.
Essex has been in scintillating form throughout the tournament, remaining unbeaten in their group. In their journey to the finals, Essex claimed dominant victories, including a 7-5 win over Norfolk, a 12-0 thrashing of Suffolk 2nd, an 8-4 win over Suffolk 1st, a 10-2 win against Cambridgeshire 1st, another 10-2 win against Cambridgeshire 2nd, and an 11-1 triumph over Lincolnshire. These results earned them the title of Group Champions in the Midlands East Division.
In the Midlands playoff, Essex faced off against Bedfordshire, the champions of Midland West. The team displayed their characteristic resilience and skill, securing an 8-4 victory to book their place in the finals.
Essex O40s will now head to Birmingham for the finals, to take place on the weekend of April 26th and 27th. The finals will feature the semi-finals on Saturday, with the finals and the 3rd/4th place match on Sunday. With their unbeaten run, Essex will be one of the teams to watch in what promises to be an exciting conclusion to the Masters County Championships 2025.
I am sad to report that Roy Lord passed away last night.
Roy was a member of the Essex committee for many years, including taking responsibility for the Master's section.
He was also a very successful player on the Masters circuit both domestically and internationally, the highlight perhaps coming at the World Championships in Sweden in 2015 where he collected two gold medals;
He will be missed by the badminton community, especially in Southend where he's been instrumental in the running of Chalkwell Badminton Centre.

The Masters County Championship season is under way.
The O45 team travelled up to Norfolk today for a comprehensive 12-0 win, but the O50s team were unable to overcome a strong Herts team, losing 7-5 having been level after the doubles.
The O65s kick off their campaign next week with a home match against Sussex and the O40s start the following weekend against Norfolk.

Team selection is aimed at getting as many teams as possible to the Championship finals weekend and into the Premier Division of the Challenge.
